I don't know a whole lot about JPI's Fairytale Favorites dolls. The packaging doesn't have a production year on it, but I believe they may have come out a few years after the more successful line of Starr Modeling Agency dolls. The females in the Fairytale line used the same headmolds as the Starr dolls, with different hair and eye colors, but the body style is exactly the same.

The very cool thing about these dolls is...there's men here! Okay, so they all have the same faces, they're just painted differently, but hey...how often do manufacturers come up with male partners for the female dolls? And these guys are pretty buff. They're manly men. They're men in tights!

Okay, enough silliness. There were originally five sets of Fairytale Favorites dolls, each "Princess" being partnered with her "Prince". The series was eventually expanded to offer a total of nine sets of "Princesses" and "Princes". I put these words in quotes because not all the girls were Princesses. One could argue that Pocahontas, as the daughter of an Indian Chief, is a Princess, but certainly Red Riding Hood wasn't. And if you've read the original story of Rapunzel, her parents weren't royalty, they just lived next door to a witch who grew some interesting things in her garden.

Nevertheless, these dolls are very well-made, well-dressed and hard as heck to find.
They don't come up very often at all, and the ones I do have, I've lucked into.

You can see the female body style here, on the JPI Starr Modeling Agency page, so we'll concentrate for now on the guys. The male doll is made of the same hard plastic that the female dolls are made from. The neck twists from side to side, but does not tilt. The arms are bent at the elbows and pivot at the shoulders.

The waist is a twist-n-turn, with the join being straight across instead of slanted as they are on the girls. While the legs are more flexible than the body, they still do not bend or hold a pose. They are jointed at the hip.

Loafer-type shoes are molded onto the feet with raised lines, but they are not painted, usually being covered by the cloth boots worn by the guys.

The female dolls, as mentioned before, use the same headmolds as the Starr dolls, also made by JPI. Different color hair was used, and different eye colors painted in. You will probably recognize them, but here's a quick run-down:

"A" headmold - Snow White - used by JPI Amber
"B" headmold - not used - used by JPI Toya
"C" headmold - Princess (with Beast) - used by JPI Misty
"D" headmold - Mermaid and Cinderella - used by JPI Starr
"E" headmold - Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood - used by JPI Dawn
"F" headmold - Princess Jasmine and Sleeping Beauty - used by JPI Taylor
"G" headmold - Pocahontas - used by JPI Jade

(Hmmm...wonder where they got that name?)

(It's because of the name of the Arabian Princess doll that makes me believe the last four, at least, came out soon after the 1991 Disney movie, Aladdin.)
